1961 was founded in 2017 by Director, Gabriel Loy. Located in an industrial building in Singapore, 1961 is a contemporary art gallery which produces and presents an international programme of projects and exhibitions by artists, curators and interdisciplinary professionals. The space seeks to contribute to the building of artistic infrastructure within its community.

In its first year, 1961 installed four solo exhibitions by British artists, Keith Coventry, Matt Calderwood, Gary Woodley and Ian Whittlesea. The programme continued with exhibitions by German-born painter Jost Münster, South African artist HelenA Pritchard and Hong Kong media art pioneer Ellen Pau. In 2019, 1961’s exhibition roster included Singaporean artists Vanessa Lim Shu Yi, Khairullah Rahim, Raymond Yap and Francis Ng, amongst others. 1961 was also featured in the 2018 and 2019 Singapore Art Week programme and participates in the annual East Side Open Studios, organised by Singapore art space and studio, Peninsular.
