Matt Calderwood: More or Less There

Matt Calderwood: More or Less There

21 April - 16 June 2017

1961 is pleased to present More or Less There , a solo exhibition of new works by London-based artist Matt Calderwood.

For this exhibition, Calderwood has developed flexible systems for works that can adapt to changing circumstances and material variables, simultaneously minimising any rigidity hindering the work from absorbing and integrating unexpected turns of events.

The 3 wall based works each occupying a corner of the gallery are adapted from a set of instructions sent by the artist to the gallery. The completed work includes and encourages interpretation of the instructions and through correspondence with the artist. Building on Calderwood’s previous engagement with architectural motifs and structural forms, repeated outlines displayed in pairs form a visual thread through the exhibition.

Completing the exhibition is a sculpture titled Untitled (Billy) (2017). For the piece, Calderwood attempts to largely utilise materials and objects that can be absorbed by life/the gallery after the exhibition concludes. The work is a precarious balancing act of objects concealed within the visual stability and stance of a bookcase. The relationships between each of the elements play a significant role in the structural integrity of the sculpture. The system of the sculpture explores the notion of the universal standard and relationships between the global transfer of goods and ideas, and the locally sourced.
